After being established in 1930 Citizen Watch Co., Ltd. founded (alongside watch production) its machine tool business which soon expanded and became known as the "Precision Machinery Division". This division employed over 50 people in the new Citizen Watch Tanashi Works following its completion in May 1936. The AL-1 was produced during this period and remained in use within the Tool division for many years. This model was also sold commercially from 1931.
